    PREVENTING
CHILDHOOD LEAD POISONING:
The First Comprehensive National Conference
October 7 & 8, 1991
The Omni Shoreham Hotel,
Washington, D.C.

THE CURRENT
EPIDEMIC
Lead poisoning is the foremost
environmental problem and
preventable disease in children.
Over 3,000,000 U.S. children
under age seven have hazardous
levels of lead in their blood — one
child out of every Six. :
Low level lead exposures in
children cause IQ reductions,
attention span deficits, reading and
learning disabilities, and behavior
problems.
Despite the scope and severity of
this disease, the vast majority of
cases are never identified or treated.
WHO WILL BE
COMING?
Researchers, physicians, nurses,
public health professionals,
Laboratory and testing experts,
Representatives from the housing,
finance, real estate, and insurance
industries,
Teachers, environmentalists,
contractors, trainers, parents, and
community organizers, and
Federal, state and local
government staff.
WHAT YOU WILL
LEARN:
The latest research results on
neurotoxic effects at low dose,
When and how to screen —
what to tell parents,
How to implement the Centers for
Disease Control's new guidelines
and procedures,
How local programs can begin to
shift from reaction to primary
prevention,
How cleaning up dangerously
leaded houses can protect children,
provide jobs in the inner city, and
revitalize neighborhoods,
State-of-the-art procedures for
lead-based paint testing,
abatement, worker protection,
cleanup and disposal, and,
Presentation of national awards
and opportunities to highlight local
success stories.

WHAT YOU CAN
CONTRIBUTE:
Share new approaches, ideas,
linkages, and success stories,
Help design a national agenda
for action in small group and panel
discussions, and,
Bring someone who needs to be
part of the solution.
