FOR RELEASE: Monday, March 24, 1969

A group of 27 Negro police officers today sued the City of

Mobile, Ala., and its Chief Of Police, James J. Robinson, in the

U.S. District Court charging the Mobile Police Department with

discrimination against Negro officers.

The plaintiffs charge that they are assigned to work only

in the Vice Control Division, the Juvenile section, the Patrol

Division, and the Criminal Investigation Department but "excluded

from all other divisions solely on account of their race or color."

They also charge that the Department assigns them to squad car duty

on a segregated basis.

The Negro officers, through their NAACP Legal Defense and

Educational Fund, Inc. attorneys, are seeking a declaratory

judgment to halt above stated practices and asking that the

Mobile Police Department be enjoined from carrying out such actions

in the future and that the Mobile police take “affirmative action"

to eradicate the effects of the above listed practices. For

further information, contact LDF attorney Miss Frankie Fields in

Mobile at 432-1691.
