RE: Suggested release for Philadelphia and Camden papers
Reversing an earlier decision, the Board of Managers
of the Cooper Hospital of Camden, New Jersey has approved
the application for staff membership of Negro gynecologist,
Dr. Stanley T. West.
|
The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, “Inc. ; |
filed a complaint with the United States Department of Health,
Education, and Welfare on June 27, 1967 claiming that Cooper
and two other Camden hospitals, West Jersey Hospital and
Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital excluded or limited the number
of Negro physicians in granting staff membership. The civil
rights organization demanded that funds be withheld from
these institutions pending determination of compliance with
the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Dr. West, 37, is a graduate of the Hahnemann Medical
College and is presently on the faculty of the Montefiore--
Morrisania Hospital in New York City. In 1962 when stationed
in Vietnam Dr. West set up a civilian medical care program |
which has been praised by the Air Force.
