‘This week the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. attorneys
will argue two cases before the Supreme Court which will have wide impli-
cations on jury selection and school board selection across the South.
«In the £irst case, Turner v. Fouche LDF will ask the Court to strike
down statutory standards which govern jury selection in Georgia because
they are vague and permit the arbitrary exclusion of Negroes from Jury
rice in violation of the 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Consti-
ion. Added interest in this case arisee from the fact that school
ards in Georgia counties are selected from ery lists. Because of this
law there are no Negroes on juries and subsequently none on countyyschool
oards.
‘In Carter v. Jury Commission of Greene County LDF will ask the court
void an Alabama law because it requires that jurors be persons “who
are generally reputed to be honest and intelligent and are esteemed in
he communi ior i te judgments"
