Hiw YORK, Sept. 27.--Attorneys for ‘the BAACP Legal Defense Fund 

teday moved to secure release of five students demonstrators, 

three of whom are denied bail and confined to jail in Americus, 

les; since August Sth. 

Petition for writ of habeas corpus against Sumpter County 

Uheriff Fred Chappell was filed this morning in Stiperior court, 

jampter County, Georgia. # 

Students face unprecedented charges of “attempt te ne 

insurrection” against state of Georgia ( pital offense), 

fot, unlawful assembly, assault with intent to kill, and 

Fesisting arrest. NAACP Legal Defense attorneys argue rights re 

of freedom cf speech and assembly are violated. They also obj 

te the vague charge of “insurrection” applied to protest agai 

segregation. 

¢ The WAACP Legal Defense Fund is being represented on the 

scene by attorney &. 8. King of Albany, Ga.
