CHARLES S. ZIMMERMAN ELECTED TO NAACP
LEGAL DEFENSE AND EDUCATIONAL FUND BOARD
NEW YORK - Charles S, Zimmerman, secretary-treasurer, of the
Dressmakers Union, Local 22, ILGWU, and recent "Citation of Honor"
award winner ef the Council of Spanish-American Agencies of New York,
and five other religious, labor and lay leaders were elected to the
Board of Directors ef the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund,
Ince, it was announced this week by Thurgood Marshall, fBirector-
Counsel of Legal Defense,
Mr, Zimmerman and the other new members were unanimously
elected at a recent meeting of the Board held at Legal Defense head-
quarters, 107 West 3rd Street, New York.
The other new members are Hon. Willard W. Allen, Sovereign
Grand Commander, The United Supreme Council, 33°, Prince Hall Masons
and President of Southern Life Insurance Coe; Rabbi Judah Cahn, Temple
Israel, Lawrence, N.Y.3; George K, Hunton, national secretary of the
Catholic Interracial Council; Mrs, Daisy E, Lampkin, Vice President,
Pittsburgh Courier; Carl Murphy, president, Afro-American newspaperse
NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., is the le-
gal arm of the National Association for the Advancement of Colered
People which has waged a long and uphill fight to establish the
constitutional rights for Negroes to vote, to educate their children
without regards to race, to travel without being discriminated and
segregated against, and to work and live as other people.
During the past 15 years Legal Defense has participated in
hundreds of cases throughout the land, and its lawyers have appeared
37 times before the United States Supreme Court in major cases in-
volving the basic rights and principles denied Negro Americanse
Among the most celebrated cases are the Smith v. Allwright
which affirmed the right of Negro citizens to vote in primaries; the

Sweatt and McLaurin cases, which established the right of Negroes to
attend state supported graduate and professional schools in states
which had previously barred Negroes.
The most recent and most comprehensive cases ever prepared
by Legal Defense are the now famous school segregation cases which
ask the United States Supreme Court to outlaw segregation in public
and elementary schools,
The election of the six new members brings the governing
body of Legal Defense to a total of 3he
Mr. Zimmerman, a native of Ukraine who came to America in
1913 at the age of 15, has been active in the labor movement since he
was in his teens, He joined the original United Garment Workers Union
in 1915, and later the International Garment Workers Union in 1916,
He has been with Local 22 since 1923.
Mr, Zimmerman represents the national American Federation
of Labor on the National Board of Community Chests and Councils of
America, a member of the board of directors of the Community Chests,
a member of the board of directors of the Panel for Americans, is
provisional chairman of the Spanish Labor Committee, and is a member
of the board of the National Conference of Christians and Jewse
Last year he received the National Urban League's Labor
Award and two weeks ago was named the 195), winner of the "Citation of
Honor" Award of the Council of Spanish-American Agencies of New York
for his outstanding contributions to the Puerto Rican people in New
York City.
