i N.C. EMERGENCY COMMITTEE TO LAUNCH 
STATEWIDE SCHOOL INTEGRATION DRIVE 

DURHAM, N.C.---A statewide effort to achieve complete school 
desegregation in North Carolina will be launched at a benefit 
banquet on January 21 in Durham by a group of prominent local citizens. 

The Emergency Committee for North Carolina School Integration 
will hold its first annual event in behalf of the NAACP Legal 
Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF), which has taken action in 
30 school cases in the state, winning orders to desegregate in 24 of 
the cases to date. 

Under the leadership of Charlotte attorney Julius L. Chambers, 
the LDF in North Carolina is currently pressing for the integration 
of schools in Charlotte, Durham, and Winston-Salem, actions affecting 
nearly 200,000 children, 

Two nationally known civil rights lawyers will come to North 
Carolina to assist the Committee. 

Clifford L. Alexander, Jr., former Chairman of the U.S. Equal 
Employment Opportunity Commission, and LDF Director-Counsel Jack 
Greenberg will speak at the kick-off dinner at the Durham Hotel-Motel 
(formerly Jack Tar Hotel) on Wednesday, January 21, at 7:30 p.m. 

Honorary Co-Chairmen of the Committee are John S. Stewart, 
president of the Mutual Savings & Loan Association of Durham, and 
Dr. Carlyle Marney, director of Inter-Faith House in Lake Junaluska, 
N.C.
