The Hon. Drew S. Days III
Assistant Attorney General
Civil Rights Division
10th and Constitution Avenue N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20530
Re: Garner v. Memphis Police Department
Dear Mr. Days:
This is to follow up on my previous letter of September 26,
1979, requesting Justice Department involvement and partici
pation in the above-noted case. I am enclosing a memoran
dum which we recently filed with the court regarding
the necessity for further hearings and which briefly dis
cusses some of the issues which we feel are essential to
the case. It is our belief that both the appearance and
the technical assistance of the Justice Department will
be important in obtaining a favorable decision in this
case.
Thank you for your consideration of this matter.

Sincerely,
] \ . 'J .. r

Steven L. Winter
