SCHOLARSHI PROGRAM 

NEW YORK~---Sixty-four students are presently attending desegregated 
colleges and universities under a scholarship program administered 
by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, according to a 
report made public here today. 

Purpose of the scholarships is to implement Legal Defense Fund 
desegregation victories by establishing a flow of Negro students 
into publicly supported and formerly segregated colleges. 

The scholarship fund was established two years ago with a 
m the estate of the late New York Governor and Senator 

Lehman. 

Two enrolled in predominantly Negro Deen South 
colleges Lehman scholarships. 

Dr. John W. Davis, former president of West Virginia 
College, administers the scholarship program for the Legal Defense 
Fund, 

In his report to Jack Greenbera, Legal Defense Fund director- 
counsel, Dr. Davis said 46 scholarships were awarded this year, 
including one for graduate work the University of Florida last 
summer, 

More than 400 students had applled for scholarships for the 
1964-65 school year, 

Additionally, 19 students who received scholarships last year 
were authorized grants to continue th studies this year. Dr. 
Davis said 111 applications were received last year. 

Another 14 students who received scholarships last year were 
either graduated or did not return to school this year for other 
reasons, Dr. Davis said. 

To date, $56,000 in scholarships has been paid, the report saic 

Eleven scholarship students are presently attending the 
University of Mississippi; ten at the University of South Carolina; 
eight at the University of North Carolina and six at the University 
of Alabama. 

Also, five are attending Clemson College, S. C.; three each at 
Georgia Institute of Peckno logy and East Carolina College, eenville, 
N. C., and two each at Louisiana State University and Millsaps 
College, Jackson, Miss. 

One Lehman scholarship recipients is at each of the following 
institutions: 

University of Virginia; University of Cincinnati; University 
of Georgia; Morehouse College; Northeast Louisiana State; Richmond 
Medical College; University of South Mississippi and North 
Carolina College. 

Also, Emory University; Bennett Colleae; Armstrong College, 
Savannah, Ga,; St. Vincent Nursing School, Brimingham, Ala.; 
Winthrop College, Rock Hill, S. C., and Southern State Colles2, 
Magnolia, Arkansas,
