MEMORANDUM
TO: WORKING PRESS

We have received a number of inquiries concerning the
resignation of the NAACP's legal staff. The NAACP Legal Defense
and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is not in any way involved in
this controversy. All our 25 staff attorneys are at work. The
confusion undoubtedly has arisen b

ecause of the similarity of
|
LDF was founded by the NAACP in 1939 and
our names. While
represents many members of the Association, members of other
civil rights groups, and those who belong to no organization,
the Legal Defense Fund (LDF) is completely and totally separate.
Under Thurgood Marshall, our Chief Counsel until 1961 when he
went to the bench, and at present under Jack Greenberg, the Legal
Defense Fund (LDF) has had its independent Board of Directors, its
own sources 0
