Statement by Jack Greenberg, director-counsel
NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.
March 20, 1969
Today's NEW YORK TIMES quotes Mr. Russell xX. Thompson of
Memphis, Tenn., to the effect that the NAACP Legal Defense
Fund is "supporting his inquiry" into the events surrounding
the assassination of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Though it is generally known that Mr. Thompson has discussed
certain facets of his investigation with us, we have made no
decision to support Mr. Thompson's inquiry or indeed the
investigative efforts of any private individual. We think
that anyone having information bearing on Dr. King's assas—
sination should give it to the appropriate law enforcement
authorities as we have urged Mr. Thompson to do.
The Legal Defense Fund, however, is concerned that all questions
regarding Dr. King's assassination be fully explored by the
authorities and that resolution of the many doubts remaining
be made by the responsible agencies.
