MEMORANDUM TO: SELECTED EDITORS
FROM: Jesse DeVore
Director, Public Information
Jack Greenberg, director-counsel ofthe NAACP
Legal Defense Fund, made the following statement eoday upon
learning of a decision handed down today by. the Fourth Circuit
Court of Appeals, Richmond, Va. prohibiting discrimination
against Negro physicians in James Walker Memorial Hospital,
Wilmington, N.C.: "This case: is somewhat different from the
Greensboro, N.C, Hill-Burton case, which we won and the Supreme
Court refused to review on March 2nd, It therefore significantly
extends the coverage of the constitution to other governmentally
connected hospitals. We now have 11 other hospital cases pending
or ready to be filed."
