Legal Defense Fund Statement on
Agreement Between E O.C. and

S Newport News Shipbuilding Co,

Exemplary----is our designation of the conciliation agreement

between the Newport News Shipbuilding Company and the Equal

Employment Opportunity Commission, announced today.

Agreement to promote the Rev. J. C. Fauntleroy, president of

the local NAACP chapter, and other complainants, shows the good

intentions of the Newport News Shipbuilding Company.

The firm's additional pledge to end discriminatory hiring

and future promotion practices; and, its willingness to end

segregated facilities in its plant, shows intention to comply

with the spirit as well as the letter of the law.

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. takes

particular pleasure in congratulating the Newport NAACP*, because

this is one of the first complaints filed as a result of our (Legal

Defense Fund's) task force of last summer,

This group of field workers operated in 10 states and reg-

istered hundreds of complaints during that two month period.

We are pleased that this complaint did not join our 19

Title VII employment cases now in litigation.

si. *It is regrettable that the Commission has no power to enforce

he, agreement, but we trust the good faith of the Company to ensure

qual employment opportunity for Negroes.
