Statement by Jack Greenberg, Director-—Counsel.

NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.

We have just learned that Jerris Leonard of the Department

of Justice has called the U.S. District Judge in the Charlotte,

N. C. school case to inform him that the Justice Department is

intervening in that case on the side of the school board and

against the Negro school children.

It is a disgrace and an outrage that, after all these years

of struggle, when Negro children are finally within sight of

achieving their constitutional rights, the full combined weight

of the federal government and the school board is thrown against

them to keep them as close as possible to their former segregated

status.
