New York, N.Y. - The appointment of Adrian W. DeWind 

as national chairman of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational 

Fund's 33rd annual campaign was announced today by the organiza- 

tion's president, William T. Coleman, Jr. 

Mr. DeWind, who is a leading tax attorney and partner of 

the firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, will direct 

the 1973 campaign to raise $5 million for the Fund's legal and 

educational programs. 

Since its inception in 1940, the Legal Defense Fund has 

initiated many landmark civil rights cases dealing with 

discrimination in education, employment, housing and the administra- 

tion of justice. Its 26 staff attorneys -- and about 400 cooperating 

lawyers -- now have more than 1,200 cases on their dockets. 

For more than a decade, the organization also maintained a 

modest scholarship and internship program for black law students. 

That undertaking recently was expanded by creation of the Earl Warren 

Legal Training Program. 

Mr. DeWind is a member of the board of directors and on the 

executive committee of the Legal Defense Fund. He also serves on

the boards of the Revlon Foundation, the Metropolitan Applied 

Research Center, the National Committee against Discrimination 

in Housing, and as a trustee of the Harvard Law School Association 

of New York City. 

Mr. DeWind resides at 37 West 12th Street in New York City 

with his wife, Joan Elizabeth.
