7 August 26, 1970 NEW YORK, N.Y.--Jack Greenberg, Director-Counsel of the ' NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., upon learning of the Supreme Court's decision to deny a stay of desegrega- tion in the Charlotte school case, issued the following statement: "The Legal Defense Fund is pleased that the black children of Charlotte will be able to attend a completely desegregated school system this year. We call upon the school authorties and the citizens of Charlotte to obey the law as declared by our highest courts and carry out the plan in good faith. We believe that the desegregation plan will ultimately prove beneficial to all the children of the City if implemented in a spirit of cooperation and obedience to the lawg. We also call upon the United States Department of Justice to carefully monitor the situation and take any necessary action in the event that the law is not obeyed. AP = Charlotte, N.C.
