Lani Guinier
LDF participation
California Supreme
in petition to
Court
I recommend LDF sign on to an origj-nal
petition j-n the California Suprene Court
that seeks, pursuant to Californj-a statutes
and regulations providing mandatory
outreach by county registration offi-
cials, d.eputization of public employees
as registrars.
I recommend we participate to enforce
the California statutes in an attempt
to interpret "outreach" liberal1y to
emphasize qovernment' s responsibility
to enroll eligible voters. I am avail-
able to revievr the final petition and
to participate in strategy discussions
with the primary attorneys. I envision
a role similar to the one we played with
the NYCLU in elCg-k v. Cuomg. Especially
since we do fula-raisingE Caliiornia,'
our 1ow key participation in this case
should be extremely cost effective.
A draft petition is attached. The
final petition will be filed April 8.
