WASHINGTON, D.C. — 

than 500 civil rights advocates scheduled to attend the Tenth Anniversa- 

ry luncheon of the Washington Committee, NAACP Legal Defense and Edu- 

cational Fund. 

The commemorative luncheon, to be held on Friday, April 11 at the 

Sheraton Park Hotel, formally opens the organization's fund-raising cam- 

paign in the Metropolitan area. This year, the Committee plans to raise 

$75,000 for the Legal Defense Fund as part of a national goal of 

$4,500,000. 

Among those attending will be Secretary of Transportation William 

T, Coleman, Jr. Wiley A. Branton, a member of the national board of the 

Legal Defense Fund, and Harold E. Ford, Representative from Tennessee, 

will preside. 

Honorary chairman of the Luncheon Committee is Mrs. Ronald V.- 

brit, Jr., Mrs. William S. Thompson, 

Dellums. Co-chairmen are Mrs. James M. 

Mrs. Alvin F. Robinson, Robert R. Nathan and Michael Straight. 

Long termed the legal arm of the civil rights movement, 

Defense Fund now has 28 cases pending U.S. Supreme Court, and 

more than 1,000 cases in lower courts to enforce the rights 

of minorities guaranteed by the Constitution. 

The Legal Defense Fund was formed in 1939 by the NAACP, but has 

functioned as a complete 
ce the early 1950's.
