- ON RICHMOND SCHOOL DESEGREGATION PLAN
In an area ts speak louder than promises, the
Richmond Public today took a giant stride towards
the goal of fully desegregated education. The desegregation plan,
as approved by the court, can be an effective means for progress.
Implementation of the agreement to totally desegregate
faculties will greatly augment the School Board's pledge to de- p g
On the other hand, the agreement does not specify the number
of schools and the number of chers gregated by
September of 1966; nor, doe 5 it set a deadline for the accomplish-
ment. of the complete desegregation of all of the faculties.
The Board's promise to actively recruit Negroes for top-
level administrative positions is unprecedented among the more
than 180 school and faculty desegregation cases presently being
litigated by the Legal fense and Educational Fund.
We hope that the same good faith exhibited by the School
Board in entering this agreement will be carried through in its
policies and practices in the coming school year.
And, we look forward t ° » ive evaluation upon con-
clusion of the spring registrations for 1967-68.
