Roemer and HLA (LULAC) v. Attorney General of Texas. Enclosed you
will find copies of the relevant briefs in each case. Please note
that this packet does not contain the respondents' briefs, as we
have not yet received them. We will send them under separate cover
as soon as they arrive.
Chisom and HLA will be argued before the United States Supreme
Court on Monday, April 22nd. Professor Pamela Karlan of the
University of Virginia Law School will be arguing the cause for the
Chisom petitioners. Julius Chambers, Director Counsel of the NAACP
Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. will argue the cause for
the HLA and LULAC petitioners. The moots will be held at
Georgetown University Law Center, 600 New Jersey Avenue, N.W., Room
301, in Washington, D.C. Both of these voting rights cases raise
critically important issues interpreting the scope of the 1982
Amendments to the Voting Rights Act.
