M. at Carnegie Hall on behalf of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. This is Mr. Rubinstein's 4th year in benefit performance for the Legal Defense Fund. resently, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the legal arm of the civil rights movement, is handling 181 separate groups of cases now in courts dealing with civil liberties and civil rights. In addition, Legal Defense Fund attorneys are representing more than 12,000 individuals who have participated in various civil rights activities. It was established, as a separate corporation, by the NAACP in 1939 and now works with a staff of 17 full-time and 120 cooperating attorneys. According to Mrs. John W. Davis and Mrs. Douglass Haskell, benefit co-chairmen of the 75-member committee, the predicted $25,000 will be used to help meet the legal expenses of the Legal Defense Fund estimated at $1,400,000 in 1964, During its existence, the volunteer Benefit Committee has raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars. Among the subscribers to the concert are Mrs. Herbert H. Lehman, Mrs, Harrison Tweed, Mrs. Ronald Tree, Mark Goodson, Judge and Mrs. Francis Rivers and Dr. and Mrs. Robert C, Weaver.
