ATLANTA LAWYER CITED
FOR CIVIL RIGHTS WORK
ATLANTA---Prominent Atlanta lawyer Donald L, Hollowell has been
cited by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. for
his legal efforts on behalf of the civil rights movement, Jack
Greenberg, Fund director-counsel, announced today.
A similar award went to Atty. S. W. Tucker of Richmond, Va.
Both lawyers are part of a force of 120 cooperating attorneys
working for the Fund throughout the South. The Legal Defense Fund
is an independent, non-profit corporation established in 1939,
A native of Wichita, Kans., Hollowell is a graduate of Lane
College, Jackson, Tenn., and Loyola University Law School, Chicago,
Ill, He has been practicing law since 1952, and in the 10 years
he has been associated with the Legal Defense Fund, he has been in-
volved in virtually every important civil rights and civil liberties
case in Georgia.
Among the important cases he helped win was that of Preston
Cobb Jr., a Negro teenager who was convicted and sentenced to die
for the death of a 71-year-old white farmer, The conviction was
reversed last December after four years of litigation. Hollowell
was also instrumental in winning the suit to integrate the
University of Georgia.
A highlight of the 47-year-old lawyer's career came during the
late President John F. Kennedy's 1960 campaign when he mastermined
the legal maneuvering to get the Rev. Dr, Martin Luther King Jr.
out of Georgia State Penitentiary.
The senior partner in the Atlanta law firm of Hollowell,
Ward, Moore and Alexander, he has been active in voter registration
drives and Democratic politics in the Atlanta area.
