Re : Chicago Voting Case

you asked me to insure that LDF continued to participate
in Mars Ketchr,rm Y.--Byrn9, a 52 challenge to ward lines in
Cfri "

just Prevailed in the 7th
circuit, are ;;;;;;dted by LDF cooperating lawvers Judd

Miner and Bridget Arimond'

AsaresultofyourrequestrlaskedBridgettoestimate
their budgetary needs on remand. As she indicates in the
attached lettei, they do not want any additional LDF staff
assistance, but would appreciate whalever financial assistance
we can provide. Ehus f ar ,

-*" h..r. paid them $3700 ' 00 ' Their
expenditures totalled $63,000.00, t6 which MALDEF contributed
$1r,500. 00.

I propose that we cont.ribute an additional s4000'00 for the
proceedings on remand. This amounts to one-fifth of the pro-
jected costs for the remand' I propose that we condition
6or contribution on three factors:

r)thattheykeepusabreastofsignificantdevelop-
ments and send us copies of all pleadings, and

2) that we not pay until the end of the year or until
our financiai iituation improves, whichever comes

first, and

3) that they agree to emphasize' in publi-c statements
about ItL "i=",

their role as LDF cooperating attorneys'
