NOTHING FAILS LIKE SUCCESS

By Amos T, Hall
President, Grand Masters! Conference

Why should Prince Hall Masons of America support the NAACP Legal

Defense and Educational Fund?

The answer is obvious. Masonry is founded upon the principles of

brotherly love and justice, It sanctions no barriers, It is no

respecter of creed or color,

The May 17, 195) Supreme Court decision was a momentous victory

for the NAACP Legal Defense and Negro Americans, and already we have

reports which show that integration in the public schools of this

country is workable.

There is good news of desegregation from West Virginia to Arizona

and from Washington to California, The record even shows that two

communities of the Deep South have moved ahead of the Court's decree,

In spite of the widespread bemoaning of the fate of the Negro

teacher in the South, there has been no wholesale firing of Negro

teachers in desegregated public school systems.

Certainly, the May 17th Supreme Court decision was a momentous

victory for the Negro - for, because of this decision, great strides

toward full freedom and first-class citizenship have been made,

But nothing fails like success,

Wetve come a long way, but we've still a long way to go. And we

cannot afford to let the victory thus far push aside the dreams that

gave birth to the fight for freedom,

We haven't marched off the map yet. Complete desegregation and

-2-

total integration are not realities. Until we remove every badge of

inferiority, the fight is still on.

So, we still need NAACP Legal Defense and NAACP Legal Defense

needs you.

Through the years the Legal Defense attorneys have championed the

rights of the Negro in America, Poor schools, police brutality, job

and housing bias, violence and bombings, Jim Crow travel and injustice

in the courts have been their special concern,

The efforts and ingenuity of Legal Defense lawyers have been

rewarded with the right of Negroes to vote in the white primaries in

the South; the equalization of salaries for Negro teachers; the

establishment of the right of Negroes to travel in interstate commerce

free from state discrimination laws; the outlawing of restrictive cov-

enants barring Negroes from white neighborhoods; the securing of fair

and equal trials for Negroes in criminal cases.

Any. organization that has done all of this deserves the support

of the people for whom the gains were made,

The truth of the matter is - Prince Hall Masons of America are

morally obligated to support NAACP Legal Defense and to contribute to

the Legal Defense Fund,

We know now that the walls of hate and préjudice will not fall

without a battle, We know now that no group surrenders power volun-

tarily. We know now that justice is never granted - it must be

exacted, We know now that freedom is never given ~ it must be won,

When you contribute to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund you get in

the fight for freedom; you support the crusade for complete emancipa-~

tion; you heed the warning - Nothing fails like success.

To succeed and not to fail, send your contributions today--any

amount=-to NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, 107 West 3rd St.,
