MAJOR SIT-DOWN VICTORY WON IN COURT

RALEIGH, N.C., Apr. 22 -- A major victory in the lunch counter

sit-in demonstrations was won today when the 43 Shaw University and

St. Augustine College students were acquitted by a Raleigh, N. C.

superior court.

The students were arrested in February on the sidewalk of

Cameron Village, the largest shopping Center in Raleigh, while wait-

ing for the F. W. Woolworth store to reopen. It had been closed to

exclude student protesters. This is the first major legal break-

through in the student sit-down situation.

NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund attorneys were prepared

to take the case to the highest court. Attorneys representing the

43 students were Samuel Mitchell and George Greene of Raleigh, N. C.

and Jack Greenberg of the Legal Defense Fund staff in New York City.
