Pics
MONTGOMERY--~President Johnson's address in behalf of Negro voting

rights was termed a "manifesto of strength, sincerity and sharply

defined purpose," by Jack Greenberg of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

Director-Counsel Greenberg, here representing the Rev. Martin

Luther King and the Selma demonstrators, wired the President

immediately following his address.

Full text of Mr. Greenberg's wire follows:

"For those of us involved, daily, in the task of seeking equal

justice under law, it is heartening indeed, to have the President

of the United States so mivingly thrust his mind, political passion

and prestige to our aid.

"Your statementto the world last night was a manifesto of

strength, sincerity and sharply defined purpose.

"The direction, in which you placed America in motion, can

only result in the hastening of full equality. We fervently hope

and pray for the time when Americans from all areas will heed your

call.

"Toward this realization, the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational

Fund, Inc. will continue to work, with the firm conviction that it

will be soon coming.

"You have given decisive and affirmative leadership for which

all the people of our Nation should be grateful."
