ALLAN KNIGHT CHALMERS JACK GREENBERG President Director-Counsel CONSTANCE BAKER MOTLEY Associate Counsel oS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 13, 1963, ART EXHEBIT BENEFITS ‘ NAACP LEGAL DEFENSE, NEW YORK-- The NAACP Legal Defense Fund netted $2,000 on the first day of a 10-day art festival being held in its behalf at the Brooklyn Museum this week, More than 1,000 persons visited the exhibit on its first day, It was coordinated by three Brooklyn housewives who decided to "do something about the current struggle for human rights," Prices range from $5.00 for photographs to $7,500 for "Quedado", “a six-by-eight foot abstract by the noted artist; Elaine DeKooning, ho was first to contribute her work to the exhibit. However, by the time the exhibit was ready to open, 160 artists had responded, including painters Ad Reinhardt, Hale Woodruff and Larry Rivera, sculptor Harry Bertoia and photographer Richard Avedon, Among sponsors of the exhibit are James Baldwin, Leonard Berns.) stein, Abraham Beame and Norman Thomas. Mrs. Ralph Bunche is Se Honorary Chairman, 5 The originators of the project are Mrs. Virginia Cantarella, Mrs, Cynthia Dantzic and Mrs, Donald Swan who are working with Rufus Smith, the Legal Defense Fund's Director of Development.
