LDF TO ENFORCE NEW 'RIGHTS LAW
Jack Greenberg, director-counsel, NAACP Legal Defense and
Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF), issued the following statement
yesterday upon learning of the passage of the Civil Rights Act
of 1968 by Congress:
“The passage of the Fair Housing Act presents another opportunity for racial progress through law. Fair housing means not only a right to buy or rent a house but opportunities to attend schools and hold jobs now placed off limits by residential segregation.
"The NAACP Legal Defense Fund is ing immediate plans to enforce the new law in the courts. The bill has many procedural imperfections, but the LDF never- theless will do its best to make the Act meaningful.
"In coming weeks, we will conduct a series of conferences with our cooperating attorneys across
the nation to begin a legal program for enforcing
the new law.
“In this way, the LDF can reaffirm Dr. King's faith that peaceful change is possible,"
