NEW YORK, SEPT. 19 -- JUDGE LAWRENCE PIERCE OF THE U.S. DISTRICT 

COURT TODAY APPROVED A SETTLEMENT IN THE PATTERSON V. NEWSPAPER AND 

MAIL DELIVERERS UNION HERE IN NEW YORK IN A SUIT SBR OUGHT BY THE 

NAACP LEGAL DEFENSE AND EDUCATIONAL FUND AGAINST THE UNION AND THE 

NEW YORK TIMES, DAILY NEWS, NEW YORK POST AND THE LONG ISLAND PRESS, 

THE SETTLEMENT INCLUDES HIGH LEVEL GOALS FOR MINORITY EMPLOYMENT 

IN AN INDUSTRY WHERE BLACK EMPLOYEES HAVE BEEN LARGELY EXCLUDED 

FROM FULL EMPLOYMENT IN DELIVERERS JOBS WITH NEWSPAPER PUBLISHERS 

AND WITH WHOLESALERS WHO DEAL WITH LOCAL NEWSSTANDS. 

AFTER THE PATTERSON SUIT WAS FILED, THE EQUAL EMPLOYMENT 

OPPORTUNITY COMMISSION FILED SUIT AGAINST THE NAMED DEFENDANTS 

AND THE WHOLESALERS AND NEWSDEALERS. THE TWO ACTIONS WERE THEN 

CONSOLIDATED. 

THE SETTLEMENT CALLS FOR 25 PER CENT MINORITY EMPLOYMENT PROJECTED 

OVER THE NEXT 5 YEARS, AND INCLUDES $100,000 IN BACK PAY FQ 19 

INCUMBENT EMPLOYEES OF THE NEW YORK TIMES AND THE NEW YORK DAILY 

NEWS, $10,000 FOR ANOTHER GROUP, AND $67,000 IN COUNSEL FEES AND 

COSTS. 

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ABOUT 1,000 BLACK WORKERS WILL BE EMPLOYED 

IN THE INDUSTRY WITHIN THE NEXT 5 YEARS. THE CASE WAS BROUGHT BY 

THE NAACP LEGAL DEFENSE AND EDUCATIONAL FUND IN ASSOCIATION WITH 

WILLKIE, FARR-AND GALLAGHER.
