ARGUMENT ON SCHOOL
SEGREGATION PUT OFF November 22, 1954
WASHINGTON, Nov. 22 -- The U. S. Supreme Court today postponed
the scheduled December 6 argument on the decrees implementing the
May 17 decision outlawing segregation in public schools.
The postponement was necessary, the Court announced, "in view
of the absence of the full; Court,"
Justice Robert H. Tackson, who participated in the two previous
Supreme Court hearings, died October 9 of a heart ailment. President
Dwight D, Sisenhower on November 8 appointed New York Circuit Judge
John Marshall Harlan to fill the vacancy but the Senate Judiciary
Committee put off confirmation of his appointment until after Congress
convenes in January, 1955,
