NASHVILLE HONORS THURGOOD MARSHALL

NASHVILLE, TENN. - July 7. -- Thurgood Marshall, Director Counsel

of NAACP Legal Defense & Fducational Fund, Ine., was today made an

honorary citizen of Nashville and presented with a gold key to the

cLty.

Mayor Ben West presented the NAACP Legal Defense head with the

Certificate of Honorary Citizenship and the key.

The presentation was made following an address by Marshall at the

llth Annual Institute of Race Relations held here on the campus of

Fisk University.

The institute, which ends July 10, is attended by 30 lecturer-

consultants from across the country and 100 community leaders from 20

states,

Mr. Marshall had advised the institute that despite the actions

on the part of southern politicians who/bank on circumventing the re-

cent Supreme Court decision outlawing Jim Crow in public schools, the

American people can still debate the issue.

"The race relations pattern in the South has always been taboo
in public conversation", Mr. Marshall told the gioup. "Many have been
reluctant to debate the validity of their position because the state

laws required segregation."

Mr. Marshall said that the politicians are now beclouding the

issue by raising the same old fears and trying to keep alive the ta-

boos of yesterday.

"The people, however, are debating the matter quietly in their homes and churches, And very soon it will be a matter of open dis- cussion in church pulpits, forums, radio and television round tables and other mass media for exchanging views", Mr. Marshall said.

The citation of honorary citizenship presented to Mr. Marshall by
Mayor West reads in part:-

"Greetings:

Be it hereby known to all that the Hon. Thurgood Marshall on this 7th day of July of 195) has been made an honorary citizen of the City
of Nashville. ...The city of Schools and Churches Rich in the tradition
of the Old South and in recognition thereof has been presented with
this Certificate of Citizenship."
