The future racial policy of St. Augustine, Fla. will be tested
tomorrow, Tuesday morning when NAACP Legal Defense Fund attorneys appe
before County Judge Charles C, Mathis in an effort to stop the
prosecutions of sit-in demonstrators. Over 800 persons were arrested
during 1964 racial strife. Attorneys argue that after U.S. Supreme
Court rulings on the sit-ins and the Civil Rights Act these prosecutions ©
have no basis in law, If the city decides to continue the prosecutions, 4
renewed racial demonstrations are reported possible. 2
