ADRIAN W. DEWIND 345 PARK AVENUE NEW YORK.N, ¥ 10022 January 16, 1979 BY HAND Mr. Max Frankel Editor, Editorial Page The New York Times 229 West 43rd Street New York, New York Dear Mr. Frankel: Yesterday morning's "Editorial Notebook", entitled "Remembering Martin Luther King", referred to the fading away of civil rights organizations. One organization not mentioned that has in no way faded is the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. LDF won the Supreme Court school segregation decisions twenty-five years ago, represented Dr. King in all his demonstrations, and today remains a vigorous effective force for civil rights under its present Director-Counsel Jack Greenberg (who succeeded now Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall). LDF is counsel in hundreds of civil rights cases involving employment, schools, housing, prisoner rights and capital punishment, in which it should be noted it has been almost always successful. In the last ten years, its Earl Warren Legal Training Program has made it possible for over 700 black lawyers to get through law school. It celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and the 25th anniversary of its landmark victory in Brown v. Board of Education in full vigor and effectiveness. LDF (founded by the NAACP but now totally separated, with its own Board, staff, and budget) must struggle for annual funding. It ran a small deficit of $155,000 last year but with expenditures at a level of over $4,000,000 a year, it is a continuing robust, effective and vital force in the progress of civil rights. Very truly yours, /jja Adrian W. DeWind ree Mr. Malcolm Rucker Legal Defense Fund
