Notes for Table 1° Diagnostic Analysis of Five Models for

Death Sentencing

WLS is weighted least squares (linear regression) using inverse

sampling fraction weights.

OLS is ordinary, unweighted least squares.

Std.Error or SE is the nominal standard error of the regression

coefficient as printed by the camputer.

Safe Std. Error is an estimate of the standard error using Cressie's

method (see appendix G )

WLS worst case is a run in which missing values of aggravating factors

were set to 1 for death cases and 0 for life cases, and missing

values for mitigating factors were coded 0 for death cases and

1 for life cases.

WLS with most influential cases removed is a run in which the cases with

high influence on either of the coefficients of the racial

variables have been deleted fram the analysis

WLS with Second Order Interactions is a weighted regression of death

Sentence on a variable measuring the level of aggravation, the

square of that variable, the race of victim and defendant,

their interaction and their linear and nonlinear interactions

with the level of aggravation (see appendix G )

Weighted Logistic is weighted by the inverse sampling fraction as

a case count.
