MEMORANDUM MEMOKAS-——
TO: TENNESSEE WORKING PRESS
FROM: Jesse DeVore, director of public information
NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF)
RE: KNOXVILLE SCHOOL INTEGRATION SUIT
CASE NAME: Goss et al v- Board of Education, Knoxville
LEGAL QUESTION PRESENTED: What constitutes complete desegregation
of a formerly de jure segregated school
system?
The NAACP Legal Défense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) asked
the U.S. Court of Appeals (Cincinnati, Ohio) here today to order the
Knoxville, Tenn., School Board "to change its policies and undertake
the various types of affirmative action to disestablish the remaining
segregation...."
LDF attorneys also asked the court to order pairing of identifiable
Negro school populations with nearby white school populations.
The lawyers also asked that future schools be constructed in
areas which would bring about integration and that the court retain
jurisdiction until such is accomplished.
