    James J. Fvfe

James J. Fyfe is Associate Professor at The American University,
College of Public and International Affairs, School of Justice,
Washington, DC 20016, and a research consultant to the Police Foundation.
A sixteen-year law enforcement veteran, Fyfe joined the New York City 
Police Department in 1963, and left as a lieutenant in 1979. During his 
police career, Fyfe served nine years on patrol in Brooklyn, Manhattan, 
and Queens, where he earned seven departmental citations. Fyfe was also 
assigned to the New York City Police Academy, where he served for six 
years as Chaiman of the Police Science Department, Commanding Officer 
of the Management Training Unit, and Coordinator of the Executive Development 
Program.

Since leaving the New York City Police Department, Fyfe has consulted 
for the United States Department of Justice, the United States Civil Rights 
Commission, and a variety of police and criminal justice organizations.
At The American University, he has taught a variety of police and justice 
related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His research 
on police use of deadly force has been widely published and reported, 
and received the American Society for Public Administration's 1979 
Award as the year's Outstanding National Contribution to Criminal Justice 
Administration.

Fyfe holds the B.S. (1971) from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, 
City University of New York, where he also served as Adjunct Assistant 
Professor of Police Science from 1974 to 1979. He has earned the M.A.
(1972) and Ph.D. (1978) in criminal justice from the State University of New 
York at Albany, and has held fellowships and grants for graduate study 
from the National Science Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the New 
York City Police Foundation.

He is a member of the American Society of Criminology, and,the ..Academy 
of Criminal Justice Sciences. He also is an Associate Member of the 
International Association of Chiefs of Police, a member of the Board of 
Directors of the Police Management Association, and Acting Director of 
the State University of New York at Albany, School of Criminal Justice 
Alumni Association.
