THURGOOD MARSHALL CALLS LAWYERS CONFERENCE 
ON LUNCH COUNTER PROTEST 

New York, March 10.--Thurgood Marshall, director+counsel of the 

NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., announced today that 

a working lawyers conference would be held in Washington, D. C., 

March 18-20, for the purpose of exchanging ideas and legal theories 

on the question of the "sit-in" strikes against lunch counter discrim- 

ination throughout the South. 

Mr. Marshall said that all lawyers who are now involved in this 

type of litigation, including those from southern states and border 

states, have been invited to participate. He said the entire legal 

staff of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, along with law professors and 

other legal experts, will canvass the situation and discuss the best 

and most efficient methods of defending the young people who are beince 

arrested in the lunch counter protest. 

Legal briefs and papers on the law involved in these situations 

will be distributed to the participants prior to the meeting. The 

session will be open oniy to the lawyers invited. 

Mr. Marshall stated that he expects a coordinated plan of legal 

action will emerge from this meeting. The plan will contain the best 

views of all of the participants, with documentation sufficient to 

help lawyers now engaged in these cases and others who will become 

engaged at a later date. 

In announcing the conference, Mr. Marshall made it clear that 

the entire resources of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund will be placed 

behind lawyers in these cases who request assistance.
