    MEMORANDUM FROM THE NAACP LEGAL DEFENSE 
AND EDUCATIONAL FUND, INC. MARCH 12, 1968 

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. today filed 

an amicus curiae brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in the cases of 

Witherspoon v. Illinois and Bumpers v. North Carolina. The LDF 

asks the question, "Should citizens opposéd=to capital punishment 

be excluded from juries which decide on the guilt, innocenee, and 

penalties of persons charged with capital crimes?" LDF attorneys 

argue that persons opposed to capital punishment should not be 

excluded from juries because it denies persons on trial a fair 

and representative jury. The LDF is involved in the defense of 

200 of the 400 persons facing the death penalty in this country.
