PROGRESS IN MISSISSIPPI "BEER CAN” CASE
Clyde Harvey, a Miseissippt Negro who served two menthe of
a 90 day sentence for posseasion of tao cans of beer in Mississippi,
which is a “dry” state, had hie conviction reversed todey by the
U.S. Court of Appeals.
Mz, Harvey has been active in the Miseisaipri civil rights
movement.
Jack Greenberg, Directer-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense
Fund, which now represents Mr. Harvey, iesued the following
statements
“The Clyde Harvey victory extends the right ef legal
representation to misdemeanor charges, ‘tore important, this
auccess mesne that Mr, Harvey and other civil rights advocates
in Missiasippi are act to be rushed into trie] witheut counsel
and can veceive the full protection wkk which the Legal Defense
Fund has pledged te a1] non-violent perticipante in the Civil
Rights Movement,“
