From: Ss. Anna Frank NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund 10 Columbus Circle New York, New York 10019 Telephone: (212) 586-8397 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NEW YORK, N.Y., March 18 -- The Herman Goldman Foundation has awarded $30,000 to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund to support a litigation program in juvenile justice, it was announced today by Jack Greenberg, the fund's director-counsel. The grant will be used to help correct conditions of incarceration in children's institutions and protect the legal rights of children who are caught up in juvenile courts, often without legal aid. The program, in addition, will attempt to limit and define categories of punishable offenses for which children can be jailed. In accepting the grant on behalf of the Legal Defense Fund, Mr. Greenberg noted that juvenile offenders are generally deprived of rights guaranteed to adults. "The Herman Goldman Foundation's generous gift," he said, "will enable us to take on a larger number of cases, deal with a larger number of important legal issues, and help us build a substantive body of law. "Once we have accomplished this objective, individuals and organizations throughout the country will be able to protect helpless (more) children caught up in the toils of the juvenile courts -- as well as about 100,000 children now detained in jails or jail-like places." The Herman Goldman Foundation, founded in 1943, provides support for programs in the New York City area concerned with health, social development and justice, education and the arts. It also assists organizations seeking to overcome problems of the economically and socially deprived on a national basis. eee # Note to Editor: The Legal Defense Fund is a completely separate organization even though we were established by the NAACP and those initials are retained in our name. Our correct designation is NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, frequently shortened to LDF.
