ATLANTA TO ORDER LESTER MADDOX, SEGREGATIONIST OWNER OF THE PICKRICK 
RESTAURANT, TO SHOW CAUSE WHY HE SHOULD NOT BE HELD IN CONTEMPT FOR RE- 
FUSING TO SERVE NEGROES, U.S. SUPREME COURT JUSTICE HUGO BLACK MONDAY 

_ DENIED MR. MADDOX'S APPEAL FOR A STAY OF AN EARLIER DISTRICT COURT RULING 
TELLING HIM TO OPEN HIS FACILITIES AS REQUIRED BY THE 1964 CIVIL RIGHTS 
ACT, FUND COOPERATING ATTORNEY WILLIAM H, ALEXANDER (JACKSON 5-8372) 
TODAY FILED A MOTION ON BEHALF OF THREE NEGROES WHO HAD BEEN REFUSED 
SERVICE ON TUESDAY BY MR. MADDOX. THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT, WHICH HAS 
INTERVENED IN THE FUND SUIT FROM THE DAY MR, MADDOX CHASED THE NEGROES 
FROM HIS PARKING LOT AT GUNPOINT, FILED & A SIMILAR MOTION YESTERDAY, 
AS "INTERVENOR" IN THIS FIRST TEST CASE OF THE NEW LEGISLATION.
