NEW YORK - Five new members were elected to the Board of Directors of
the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. last night.
The election was held at the Board's annual meeting at the Hotel
Roosevelt in New York City.
The new members are Dr. James M. Nabrit, Jr. of Washington, D. %,
Mr. Chauncey L. Waddell of New York City; Attorney W. J. Durhen of
Dallas, Texas; Attorney Thomas B. Dyett of New York City, and Attorney
David E. Feller of Washington, D. C.
Dr. Nabrit is President of Howard University in Washington, forme:
Dean of the Howard Law School, and a well-known civil rights attorney
who has argued many National Association for the Advancement of Colorec
People cases. Dr. Nabrit is admitted to practice of law before the
Texas Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Waddell is Chairman of the Board of Directors, Waddell and
Reed, Inc.; Vice-President, United Funds, Inc.; President, United
Funds Canada, Ltd.; and President, United International Fund, Ltd.
He is currently a Trustee of Atlanta University and Morehouse College
of Atlanta, Ga., and of the Phelps Stokes Fund of New York City.
Attorney Durham is a member of the Texas Bar Association who has
engaged in more than twenty-five major civil rights cases since he
began practicing in 1932. He is now Resident Counsel of the NAACP
Texas State Conference of Branches, Texas attorney for the Golcoen
State Mutual Life Insurance Company of Los Angeles, Calif., and of
the Universal Life Insurance Company of Memphis, Tenn.
Attorney Dyett is a member of the firm of Dyett, Alexander &
Dinkins, 401 Broadway, New York City. He is a member of the New York
County Lawyers Association, of the Association of the Bar of the City
oes
of New York and of the American Bar Association. He has been an
Assistant District Attorney for New York County under three District
Attorneys from 1927-1937, and a member of the New York City Civil
Service Commission.
Mr. Feller is a member of the firm of Feller, Bredhoff and
Anker which is currently general counsel to the Industrial Unicnism
Department of the AFL-CIO and the United Steelworkers of America
He has been an attorney for the Department of Justice, 1946-48: Chief
Law Clerk to the Chief Justice of the United States, 1948-49; assis-
tant general counsel to the CIO and United Steelworkers of America,
1949-54; associate general counsel to the above organizations in
1954-55 and a partner in the law firm of Goldberg, Feller and
Bredhoff, 1955-60.
