Thornburg v. Gingles
LDF's files from Thornburg v. Gingles, a 1986 landmark voting rights case in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the system of at-large elections of state legislators in North Carolina illegally dilutes Black voting strength in violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Court affirmed that minority vote dilution violates the Voting Rights Act regardless of whether there is proof of discriminatory intent.
