Dear Steveo: -
I vas glad tbat we nere able to participate in the recent
Symposium on the Need to Extend the Votlng Rigbts Act whlch
was sponsored by your comaittee. In putting together this
conference and presenting the issue to the ABA for decision,
you are shouing another exanple of the contribution wtrich the
organized bar can make to the cause of democracy and freedom.
l'lany groups around the country are gLad to see that the ABA
is vitallv interested in insurino that participation in American
democracy is not linited or hindered by the effects of, unlawful
discriminatory schemes of the past.
This office distributed a papet et the conference. Unfortunately,
it was a sLightJ.y incompleted version. I am submitting herewith
a completed verslon and hope that you can substitute it for the
one which was subnitted earlier.
I understand that you wiIl transcribe the discussions which
occurred at the conference. lle would Like to have a complete
transcript of the remarks of Attorney General Heteod of South
Carol-ina. We wl1L, of course, reirnburse you for xeroxing and
