Re: Gingles v. Edmisten, Pugh v.
Hunt, Cavanagh v. Brock
Dear Messrs. Horton, Donaldson, and Hunter:
Jim trIa1lace and I have agreed to get together on May 4,
1983 to discuss stipul-ations of fact to-be used in ttre
trial- of these three cases. Our purpose is to shorten
the -trial by avoidance cf witnesses testifying to facts
to which we a1l- agree. Examples of this are previous
laws concerning registration, the chronology ilf the
enactment of the L982 pLan, and the vote resuLts of
various elections around the state. You are invited to
come and join us. We wilL meet at 10:30 on May 4 in
Jim Wallace's office. We have agreed that we will con-
tinue meeting into the night if our conversation appears
t-o be productive. If we do not finish on May 4 and-
further meeting seems to be warranted, we will meet
again on May 6.
You are all invited to join us. Obviously, it wiLl not
shorten the trial much if we don't all agree. However,
if these dates are inconvenient for you, -Jim and I can
hash out preliminary stipulations which we can submit
t-o you for approval or modification prior to making them
f inal.
