    PRESS RELEASE
April 28, 1969

FOREST CITY, ARKANSAS--A cooperating attorney for the NAACP Legal

Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. today filed a motion in federal

court to halt a local grand jury's investigation of, disturbance

at all Negro Lincoln High School.

Attorney John Walker asked the court to prevent grand jury

investigative activities until the complaint which he filed earlier

this week on behalf of Negro students involved in the disturbances

has been acted upon.

The Negro students are alleged to have disrupted classrooms

and damaged school property, following the dismissal of active

civil rights leader Rev. J. F. Cooley who taught at Lincoln High.

Four of the students were tried and convicted in juvenile

court and are being detained at the state industrial home.

In the earlier complaint, attorney Walker challenged the make

up of the jury, charging that the poor, blacks and women are routinely

discriminated against and are never selected as jurors.
