Born in Jamaica, O. Peter Sherwood grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He joined LDF in 1974 after graduating from New York University School of Law and focused on employment discrimination cases. In notable cases like Myers v. Gilman Paper Co., he challenged the discriminatory practice of not transferring over seniority status and job protections in industries, which largely prevented Black employees from moving into higher-paying positions. After departing LDF, he continued to litigate appellate cases as Solicitor General of the State of New York from 1986 to 1991. He later served as a New York State Supreme Court Justice in the Commercial Division.
