The child of a civil rights activist, Floyd McKissick Jr. began his career in public service early, pioneering the desegregation of Durham, North Carolina, schools. After receiving his degree from Duke University School of Law, he began a career in civil litigation, where he represented large corporations, small businesses, and individuals in complex matters. He has also served his community in government: He was a member of Durham’s City Council for eight years and the North Carolina State Senate for thirteen, where he became Deputy Minority Leader and Chairman of the North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus. He currently serves as a member of the North Carolina Utilities Commission.
