James Ferguson grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, where he organized protests against segregation while in high school. After studying at Columbia Law School, he frequently collaborated with LDF throughout his career in private practice, including partnering on desegregation cases in North Carolina. Notably, he also defended the Wilmington 10. He joined the esteemed Inner Circle of Advocates and taught trial law across the globe, including in apartheid South Africa as part of his racially integrated Trial Advocacy Program.
