Born in Washington, D.C., Sylvia Drew Ivie grew up surrounded by heroes and educators not unlike her father, the late civil rights activist and surgeon Dr. Charles Drew. Fueled by a commitment to public service, she graduated from Howard University School of Law and joined LDF as an attorney in 1969. Her foundation in civil rights practice bolstered her later work in health law, where she fought in the courts for accessible health care. She later became the Senior Special Assistant to the President and CEO for External Affairs of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.
